beam the

Science

Beam the Science is a script writing and science educating body (registered under ACRAS, Reg no: 53125884W) which aims to promote science, especially physics, and mathematics to the general public, targeting for the younger generation (for more details on services offered, you may look under Services).  It is set up by Ms Pang, a science and maths educator at the same time.

The word ‘Beam’ means light beam, it is all around us almost all the time, so common that most people are unaware of the remarkable scientific theories and histories behind it.  This can come from the Sun, torch light or even your handphone.  A light beam is not just a light beam but is part of science.  This is also the case for other types of phenomena and things around us as well as we, ourselves.  Hence, this is to emphasize to everyone that, science and mathematics are not just academic subjects, but we are all part of it.  Moreover, with light beam as science, our aim is to make science as bright as this light beam.

Notice the logo is prominently purple in colour with some yellow.  The yellow colour thus represents the stereotypical colour of a light beam, which stands for understanding and awareness of phenomena already discovered by scientists and can be found in textbooks.  The purple colour represents mystery, uniqueness and imagination.  Though over the years, scientists have made many discoveries and inventions, but there are much from this Universe that have yet to be discovered, hence they are still a mystery or even just a superstitious belief, like gravity before Sir Issac Newton.  In order to try solving this mystery, imagination is essential especially when thought experiments come into place.  Scientists will never make any new discoveries by just memorizing from textbooks, doing only experiments that can be found from there and ignoring anything which no scientific theories or experimental evidence has yet to prove it.  A myth will always remain a myth if you say that it is a myth.  Scientists should build on top of what has been discovered which serves to make a theory more accurate or advanced.  Nature makes everyone unique.  Some people are good in one way, others maybe good in other ways and vice versa.  Nobody is the best overall.

Therefore, in short, yellow and purple means master your science and mathematics from the textbooks and exams questions but remain curious and open-minded for beyond the boundaries of your textbooks.

Origin of Beam the Science

Around the end of 2006 Ms Pang worked as a part-timer in Singapore Science Centre.  As a physics undergraduate, she took on this job despite having examinations for the first semester in NUS Physics Department.  This is due to interest and also hoping to earn more money to pay for the high tuition fees in NUS (refer to A Short Biography of Pang).  Her job scope is of course, helping the exhibition officers in script writing for science exhibitions.

She contributed partly in Nanotechnology exhibition and Chinese Traditional Medicine in 2006.  Then in June 2008, she helped in writing for most of the script panels and instruction panels for Formula One exhibition which just has its opening ceremony in end Aug 2008 (You can find this in greater details under Latest Events).  Ms Pang feels that it would be new in starting a script writing business, at the same time, promote science to the general public.  Beam the Science is thus started in Oct 2008.

A Short History of Pang’s Studies and Career

In 1996-1997, while in secondary school days, Ms Pang participated twice in Mathematical Olympiad and Australian Science Quiz, obtaining a credit.  In 1998-9, Ms Pang studied triple sciences in National Junior College, got a merit for chemistry S’Paper; and both A’s for Physics and Mathematics C.  In 2003, she obtained Bachelor of Business Administration in NUS.  The fact of having a business degree instead of a science one puzzled Pang’s friends and acquaintances.  (You may go to Contact Info to contact Pang if you are curious in finding out).  In 2006, she returned to NUS, but this time to Physics Department, intending to obtain a second degree in physics.  However, due to the high tuition fees, she had to discontinue in NUS after studied for only 1 semester.  Nevertheless, this does not affect her determination in pursuing knowledge in advanced physics.  She has always taught Chemistry and Mathematics before in Raffles Institution.
